Q.What is bad for increased life span, fat or carbohydrates?
Asked by:M. Manohar on 30/08/2017
Ans#1 A recent research study conducted at Population Health Research Institute (PHRI) of McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences in Hamilton (Canada) has shown by analytics based on 7 Years follow-up with 1,35,000 adults from 18 Countries that a diet which includes a moderate intake of fat and fruits & vegetables, and avoidance of high carbohydrates is associated with lower risk of death. The study presented on 29th August 2017 at the Congress of European Society of Cardiology in Barcelona (Spain) further clarifies that a higher carbohydrates diet is usually accompanied by low fat intake which may increase the risk of stroke and affect mortality. Dr. V. Mohan from Madras Diabetes Research Foundation who was the part of the research has highlighted that there is need to re-look into Indian Guidelines which restrict the intake of fat at 20% and allow carbohydrate up to 65%. In view of the findings of the above study, the carbohydrates should be restricted at 55% whereas Fat should be up to 35% in the healthy diet.

Q.Whether Protein Supplements are good for health?
Asked by:Raginee on 23/08/2017
Ans#1

Protein powders can balance hormones, assist in weight loss, support detoxification and digestion, boost your immune system, and even support pregnancy. But, all what we eat is used by our body as per the need felt at that time. Protein supplements work well if there is a requirement specially after workouts and injury. People who add powered soy, whey or other protein sources to their diet usually are just adding calories with no impact on muscle growth.

Q.What may cause heart disease?
Asked by:Raginee on 06/04/2017
Ans#1 More and more people are at risk of heart disease on account of the changing lifestyle. The heart disorders may be caused by many reasons as given:
Genetic Disorder
Inherited genetic factors may contribute in predisposing a person to atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease.
  • Congenital Defects: Structural abnormalities in the heart are common treatable birth defects, resulting from incorrect foetus development, and includes conditions such as holes in the heart and abnormal heart valves.
  • Infection: Endocarditis, an infection on the lining of the heart and the heart valves, occurs in people with damaged or abnormal heart and is caused by rheumatic fever or more degenerative or congenital disorder.
  • Tumours: Tumours like benign myxoma or malignant sarcoma in the heart tissues (rare but do happen) may cause abnormalities, and if severe may result into congestive heart failure.
  • Muscle Disorder: Cardiomyopathy, disease of heart muscle, may be caused due to inheritance, vitamin deficiency, alcohol poising, or viral infection. Myocarditis too occures due to viral infection or toxins released during a bacterial infection, and may cause inflammation of the heart muscle.
  • Nutritional Disorders: The heart muscle is sensitive to severe nutritional deficiency with alcoholism and obesity being major risk factors.
  • Impaired Blood Supply: In case on impaired blood supply the coronary arteries become narrow due to atherosclerosis, depriving the heart muscle of oxygen, resulting in angina pectoris or myocardial infraction.
  • Poisoning: Alcohol abuse can cause cardiomyopathy, where the heart becomes enlarged, leading to heart failure.
  • Drugs: Certain drugs too can disturb the heart beat or cause permanent damage to the heart muscle,

NPPA is in the process of collecting data so that the prices of all the notified medical devices considered as drugs under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act such as disposable hypodermic syringes and needles, disposable perfusion sets (used in blood transfusion), devices of HIV, HBsAg and HCV, catheters, intra-ocular lenses (lens implanted in the eye used to treat cataracts or myopia), cannulae, heart valves, Scalp Vein Set (a device specialized for accessing a superficial vein for intravenous injections) and internal prosthetic replacements (artificial replacement of a part of the body, such as tooth, facial bone, palate, or joint) can be monitored and controlled,
Cost of coronary stents was reduced with the Government's intervention by around 380 per cent. Now the ceiling prices of Bare Metal Stents (BMS), having 10-per cent market share, have been capped at ₹7,260 and Drug Eluting Stents (DES), having 90-per cent market share, at ₹29,600.

Q.Why India should be concerned about the Zika Virus?
Asked by:Reena Gaur on 02/02/2016
Ans#1 The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global emergency over the explosive spread of the Zika virus, which has been linked to birth defects in the Americas. This is cited as an extraordinary event that poses a public health threat to other parts of the world. WHO took the rare step despite a lack of definitive evidence proving the mosquito-borne virus is causing a surge in babies born with brain defects and abnormally small heads in Brazil and following a 2013-14 outbreak in French Polynesia.

India also need to worry about possible spread of Zika virus, as it had a history of attacks during 1950s as per a paper published National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune in year 1953.

It had been recorded that a significant numbers of people in India were exposed to the virus as early as in the 1950s, even before the first official case in humans was registered in Nigeria in 1954. Only 33 of the 196 people tested for the disease had immunity to it.

Zika virus attack at the time was considered to be a mild condition resulting in just a fever and a slight rash, with no long term implications. However, the threat from the virus has increased exponentially now, enough for the WHO to declare it as an international public health emergency. The Zika virus has no vaccine or cure yet and is linked to microcephaly in newborns and the Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare auto-immune disease affecting adults. With mosquito-borne diseases such as Dengue and Malaria being widespread in the country, India needs to work out how it will prevent a similar outbreak of the Zika virus.

Indian Union Health Minister Shri J P Nadda, who chaired a high-level meeting on 1st February 2016, has assured to issue guidelines towards dealing with the situation.

Q.Whether Steroids are used in Beauty Creams?
Asked by:Reena Gaur on 26/11/2015
Ans#1 Dr. Shyam B Verma, Consultant Dermatologist based in Gujarat has conducted a study and published the findings in BMJ. It has been observed that widespread misuse of skin creams and lotions containing steroids is becoming a pandemic of adverse effects. Corticosteroids, also known as steroids, has been found in many such lotions and creams, which otherwise is restricted for usage based on prescription only. Usage of creams with steroids can lead to substantial and permanent damage, especially on thin skin, such as on the face and groin whereas the side effects include pigmentation and breakdown of the skin, small and widened blood vessels on the skin, as well as bacterial and fungal infections.
The study of 2,926 dermatology patients in 2013 showed that 433 (14.8 %) were using topical steroids and out of which 392 (90.5%) had harmful effects. As required by Laws in India, strong steroids can be sold only with a registered medical practitioner's prescription. Although it is illegal, prescription of topical corticosteroids with little or no knowledge of dermatology is quite common, and many pharmacists sell steroid creams without a prescription, ignoring the box warnings.

This condition is know as Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which is the final stage of the HIV infection, it can lead to health issues like pneumonia, fungal infections and tuberculosis.Infections that take advantage of a weakened system are known as opportunistic infection.
